Playing Bowls

The 2024 Playing Season  Outdoor bowls will be played at Oxhey Bowls Club from 27th April until 29th September October 2024.  Play may start at any time from 10.00 am, finishing by 8.00 pm, seven days a week.  We plan to run a full and varied season in 2024, with several internal competitions and a busy social calendar.

Organised Playing Sessions  In 2024 we plan to run four sessions a week:

  • Monday morning roll-up – Arrive by 10.30 am for an 11.00 am start, finishing around 1.00 pm. This session is run by  Sue & David Shaftoe
  • Wednesday Cup – Arrive by 10.30am for an 11.00am start, finishing around 1.00 pm. This session is run by John Carr
  • Friday morning roll-up – Arrive by 10.30 am for an 11.00 am start, finishing around 1.00 pm. This session is run by Andy Hardstaff.
  • Sunday Cup – Arrive by 1.30 pm for a 2.00 pm start, finishing around 4.30 pm. This session is run by Kerr Hardstaff & Eliane Algaard

These sessions are all run on a ‘roll-up’ basis – no advance booking is required.  Members are asked to asked to arrive at the times shown – and in any event 15 minutes before start of play.  The organisers will be grateful if players are able to turn up a little earlier to help set up the rinks and those who have volunteered to help with green maintenance are asked to arrive earlier too.

Matches against Other Clubs  Ladies, men’s and mixed team matches are played against other local bowls clubs at home and away.

In 2024 we are planning to enter several men’s teams in the Watford Veterans Outdoor League and the Watford & Districk gala held at Kingslangley.  See our Vets page for further details.

Club Competitions  A variety of club competitions are organised during the playing season for playing members.  Many of these culminate in an end-of-season Finals Day.  This normally takes place in early September, currently planned for 7 and 8 September 2024.  Details will appear on the noticeboards at the Clubhouse.  Please contact Ken or Carole Horn for more information.

At Club competitions, players wear ‘whites’, rather than the usual ‘greys’

Open Days  Each year the Club runs several Open Days when local members of the public are invited to try their hand at playing lawn bowls on our green.  The aim is to introduce people to the game, explain how it is played and provide some coaching.  We also hope to attract new members in this way.  For information about our Open Days in 2024, see our How to Become a Member page.

Skills Days  From time to time, the Club runs one or more Skills Days, when coaching is provided for both new bowlers and those who would like to improve their game.  We plan to run at least one Skills Day in 2024 – the date has not yet been fixed.
