Playing Bowls

The 2021 Playing Season  Outdoor bowls will be played at Oxhey Bowls Club from 19 April to 27 September this year.   Play may start at any time from 11.00 am, finishing by 8.00 pm, seven days a week.  This year the playing arrangements, at least initially, will be somewhat restricted due to the Coronavirus pandemic.  Nevertheless, with sound safety measures in place, we plan to run a full and varied season in 2021.

Organised Playing Sessions  We currently run four sessions a week:

  • Monday mornings – Arrive by 10.45 am for an 11.00 am start, finishing around 1.00 pm. This session is run by Sue and David Shaftoe (Tel: 01923 250162).
  • Wednesday mornings – Arrive by 10.45 am for an 11.00 am start, finishing around 1.00 pm. This session is run by Jon and Sue Edis-Bates (Tel: 01923 283765).
  • Friday mornings – Arrive by 10.45 am for an 11.00 am start, finishing around 1.00 pm. This session is run by Isabella and Phil Cooper (Tel: 01923 461426).
  • Sunday afternoons – Arrive by 2.15 pm for a 2.30 pm start, finishing around 4.30 pm. This session is run by Marion and Sam Pugh (Tel: 01923 443869).

Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, attendance at these four sessions is currently restricted under Government Rules and Bowls England Guidance.  Those wishing to play should contact the organisers for their chosen day and book a playing session.  These are not ‘roll-up’ sessions and, since the number of players is restricted,  members who do not book will not be permitted to play.   Hopefully, as restrictions are lifted, we will be able to run roll-ups again, replacing the present booking system.

Matches against Other Clubs  Ladies, men’s and mixed team matches are normally played against other local bowls clubs at home and away.  For 2021, in common with many other clubs, we have decided to limit the number of external matches due to the pandemic, but intend to resume our normal fixture list in 2022, all being well.

In 2021 we have entered four men’s teams in Division 2 of the Watford Veterans Outdoor League.  See our Vets page for further details.

Club Competitions  A variety of club competitions are organised during the playing season for playing members.  Many of these culminate in an end-of-season Finals Day held on 4 and 5 September 2021.  Details appear on the noticeboards at the Clubhouse.  Please contact Ken or Carole Horn (Tel: 0208 428 6917) for more information.

At Club competitions, players wear ‘whites’, rather than the usual ‘greys’

Open Days  Each year the Club runs one or more Open Days when local members of the public are invited to try their hand at playing lawn bowls on our green.  The aim is to introduce people to the game, explain how it is played and provide some coaching.  We also hope to attract new members in this way.  For information about our Open Day on 13 June – see our How to Become a Member page.

Skills Days  From time to time, the Club runs a Skills Day when coaching is provided for both new bowlers and those who would like to improve their game.
